6 Nations News
Yesterday saw England & Wales both win games in the Six Nations to keep the hopes alive of a final day, winner takes all clash, on the final weekend of the tournament.
Italy v Wales
In Saturday’s first clash Wales looked fairly comfortable against Italy with a victory surprisingly built on a solid scrum platform in the Stadio Olimpico, in Rome. Wales destroyed the Italian scrum, the usual strong part of the Italian’s game, in an arm wrestle of a first half. Wales then put the Italians to the sword in the second half, as the game opened up and the ball was finally given some air, in very difficult and very wet conditions. Two tries were scores, one by Jonathan Davies and the other by Alex Cuthbert, with all the other points added by the reliable boot of Leigh Halfpenny. Wales finally run out 9 – 26 winners against Italy.
England v France
Next up was England v France from Twickenham where France in the first half was intent on spoiling the party. Owen Farrell started well with the boot as did Morgan Parra but the French, who started the game much better than the two previous encounters against Italy and Wales, were sprung in to life with a great solo try from Fofana in the first half to see the game equally poised at half time at England 9 – 10 France.
However some unusual substitutions from the French coach and a great opportunist try from Tuilagi early in the second half put the balance of power back in to the hands of the English. Farrell and then Flood, who replaced Farrell who limped off injured, kept England ahead with the boot until they finally finished the game 23 – 13 up.
Both of these victories have seen England’s hopes of a Grandslam remain, whilst keeping Wales in the hunt for a retained title, adding to the mouth watering prospect of a winner takes all clash between both team on Saturday 16th of March.
England must first see off Italy at Twickenham and Wales must overcome a resurgent Scotland at Murrayfield.
Scotland v Ireland
Today’s clash of Scotland v Ireland at Murrayfield might impact how difficult the Scotland challenge for Wales might be.
